Being in this program, provided me with great benefits. It has helped me to enter my future college, the University of Chicago. I learned many things, from living a healthy lifestyle, to becoming prepared for the world and college. I learned how to manage a business, how to create a good career, and the true meaning of success. My two oldest daughters were the first recipients of the Orrington Institute Scholarship.
What I admire about the Orrington Institute program is that the mentors bring in guest speakers from different backgrounds to speak with the young people. The speakers stress to the young people that getting an education is very important in this day and time. Choosing the correct college is key also. The program also recognizes accomplishments that each mentee obtain during school time or in their communities.
I have been proud to work and serve with the Orrington Institute since its inception in 2013. It has been a joy mentoring young students in the program over the years. The mentees are smart and eager to enrich their knowledge, education and their future. It is reassuring to pass on wisdom to this generation of learners.
One of the reasons I began this Institute was to be able to give back some of the experience, knowledge and gifts that the Lord has given me… it is truly a joy and a blessing. It gives me great pride to create, nurture and develop a program which has foci to inspire, lead, direct, and support the great learners and thinkers within this bright group of students. I am excited every year as we retain some, see others go to college, and recruit more students to become a part of something greater than themselves.

The Orrington Institute has impacted my son Kimani in a great way. It allows him to meet people that are in great careers, encourages him to attend college and instills in him qualities and characteristics to help him become the young man he desires.
The Orrington Institute has taught me that whatever struggles I might be facing in my life; my mentor is there for me by encouraging me and reminding me that I can succeed. Also, my mentor stresses to start from the bottom and climb to the top and to continue to push to myself to success.
The Orrington Institute has helped me by providing me with new experiences and the opportunity to meet new and exciting people. Through this program I have learned more about my history, community organizations and the importance of HBCU’s than I could have ever imagined.
The Orrington Institute has helped me to have a better vision of myself. Through this program I learned etiquette, information on Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and how to build a plan for a successful life.
The Orrington Institute has taught me many things. One of my lessons I’ve learned is how to take notes. This skill has helped me during my classes because note taking is essential for completing my homework and testing. I also have learned how to be respectful and organized. These set of skills have become useful in school and life. I thank my mentor for all that I have learned and what it has done for me.
I have learned a plethora of skills from the Orrington Institute that have aided me in my life. Listening to the guest speakers has helped me learn how to be more attentive to any speaker. This skill has helped me collect additional information in class and perform well on assignments. There is still much more to learn from the Orrington Institute and I am looking forward to gaining more expertise in multiple fields
The Orrington Institute has impacted me greatly by teaching me what it means to be a strong, independent, black young man. The Orrington Institute is making me a better individual, inside and out.
The Institute has made a huge impact in my life. It has changed my vision and perspective on college. It has helped me to go places that I probably would not have visited on my own. I am new to the program, but it has allowed me to become more sociable with young teenagers.
I like the idea that the program has introduced my daughters to different events in the city of Chicago such as baseball games, football classics, plays, college events etc. My daughters and I have a better father-daughter relationship. I respect the leadership of the Orrington Institute.
There are many things I like about the Institute; it offers me different places to travel, the chance to interact with successful people, and information on how to take advantage of great college opportunities. It impacts my life by providing resources which assist me in and out of school, such as teaching me manners and offering tutoring.
The Orrington Institute has helped my child to look at herself and see all the possibilities education will afford her; like the opportunity to get a scholarship and attend any college of her choice. The scholarship will assist her during her life-long educational journey.
What I admire about the Orrington Institute mentors and mentees program is that they have guest speakers to come in and speak with the young mentees about different college experiences and careers. It gives us a chance to hear from those who have actually attended the HBCU’s.
